What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy was developed in the 1920’s. It is a “non-surgical†method for the treatment of unwanted leg veins. Using a very fine needle, your health care provider injects a solution “sclerosing agent†into the veins that cause them to contract and eventually disappear. The injected veins become inflamed, blood is then unable to flow through them and ultimately, the body absorbs these non-functioning vessels. This may also be done with a laser.
What are spider and varicose veins?
Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs and lower legs. They affect 80% of all women as they age and a large percentage of men too. Varicose veins are larger. They can appear raised with a bluish color and can become quite painful.
How many treatments do you need?
The number of treatments varies from one to six treatments depending on the extent of the spider veins. The average treatment required is three to five.
Does it work for everyone?
The majority of persons who have Sclerotherapy will see good improvement. There is no guarantee that Sclerotherapy will be effective in every patient. There are a small percentage of people who after six treatments still do not have complete clearance of unwanted leg veins.
Are there any side effects?
With any procedure there is the possibility that adverse reactions may occur. The most common are itching, bruising, and transient hyperpigmentation. During your consultation your health care provider will discuss and review side effects that occasionally result from Sclerotherapy.
