Varicose Veins

Varicosities of lower extremities are bulging, twisting, large veins that usually form as a result of faulty valves in certain veins of thighs and legs. This is a common condition that affects 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men in the United States. While hereditary factors are most influential in development of varicose veins, pregnancy and prolonged sitting or standing can often worsen the condition.

What are the symptoms?

Although many patients desire treatment for their varicose veins because of their appearance, most do so because of their physical symptoms. These include fatigability, restlessness, heaviness, night cramps, and above all a sensation of nagging aching pain. Symptoms are typically worsened by prolonged standing and premenstrual cycles. If left untreated, swelling, skin pigmentation, and eventually ulceration of the legs and feet can develop with time.

What are the treatment options?

Traditionally, vein stripping, a surgical procedure utilizing multiple incisions and causing considerable pain and discomfort, has been used to treat this condition. In our center we use a revolutionary new technique known as EVLT (endovenous laser treatment). Through a needle a tiny laser catheter is introduced into the culprit vein without making an incision. The treatment is then completed with local anesthesia, and application of laser energy to obliterate the vein. The procedure is done at our center and usually takes less than an hour. You can resume normal activities immediately. EVLT is highly effective, approaching a 98 percent success rate. Any symptom related to the varicosities is completely resolved on the day of the procedure. In most cases, significant if not total regression of the large veins occurs within one to two months.

Spider Veins and Reticular Veins

Spider veins are tiny blue or purple vessels visible within the skin of lower extremities. Reticular veins are larger (4-5 millimeter) blue tinged networked veins in the same region. Both are brought about by many causes, including genetic predisposition, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and trauma to the skin. While they can be painful, spider and reticular veins are also an aesthetic nuisance.

How are spider veins treated?

Spider veins of the lower extremities and face are effectively treated with our state of the art lasers. A variety of other unsightly vascular lesions such as fine facial veins and cherry spots are also treated in this fashion. Other sophisticated techniques such as ultrasound guided sclerotherapy are reserved for the larger reticular veins. If you suffer from both varicose and spider veins, it is necessary to treat the varicosity first, as spider veins will most likely return if varicose veins remain.

What are Reticular Veins?

Reticular veins are larger than spider veins, and are usually the veins from which spider veins arise. Sometimes referred to as “feeder veins,” they are ineffectual veins which have not yet dilated.
