Vein Therapy

What are the different types of veins and how are they treated?
Treatable veins include small, thin capillaries (spider veins), medium veins (reticular veins), or the largest veins (varicose veins). It is also effective for other vascular lesions such as hemangiomas, port wine stains and other vascular birthmarks. Knotty, protruding varicose veins are not good candidates. There are many factors that contribute to the development of veins including pregnancy, weight gain, prolonged standing, and genetics.

What do patients feel during the treatment?
Most patients experience a stinging, tingling, or pinching sensation as the brief pulses of energy are delivered. With cooling gel and topical numbing cream, most patients remain comfortable.

What happens after the treatment?
Most patients return to their regular routines quickly with virtually no after-care required. If there is redness around the treated area this usually goes away in a few days. When larger veins are treated, a tan or brownish pigment may persist for a few weeks or months following treatment. It is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities for the first 24 hours after treatment. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun.

When will I see results?
Most patients show significant improvement, with the veins, blotches and/or blemishes disappearing within 2-6 weeks of treatment. However, many leg veins need multiple treatments, often over a few months before achieving optimal results. Typically, 3-4 sessions are needed. New veins may appear with time, but these too can be removed with the CoolGlide.

Are these vein treatments permanent?
Most patients achieve a significant reduction in the appearance of their veins. Factors such as long periods of standing, age, and genetics contribute to new veins. Consider once yearly treatments to "clean up" any new veins that appear.

Are the treatments safe?
Occasionally blistering and bruising can occur, but typically resolve quickly if physician instructions are followed. Other complications, such as scarring, bleeding and pigment loss, are very rare.
