What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction is one of the most technologically advanced techniques available today. This procedure can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism which can significantly reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

To understand laser vision correction better, we will first need to understand the eye. The eye works like a camera. Light enters your eye through the cornea, which provides most of the focusing power. Light then travels through the lens where it adjusts to focus properly on the retina. Light is changed by the retina into electric impulses and are carried by the optic nerve to the brain. In order to see clearly, light must be focused accurately on the retina. Myopia, Hyperopia, and astigmatism occur when the cornea is unable to focus light rays accurately on the retina.

What kind of Lasik should I choose?

Conventional Lasik
Lasik (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) can be used to treat low, moderate, and high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our doctors at Golden Vision Laser Centers use the VISX STAR S4 Active Trakâ„¢ Excimer Laser System with Iris Registration. It is one of the most advanced technologies that allow our top surgeons to apply the laser according to the patients needs. The laser system precisely balances any movement during surgery so that results are more accurate.

Procedure - This procedure is done by using a microkeratome to create a corneal flap. A cool beam laser known as excimer is then applied to the inner layers of the tissue to help accurately change the shape of the cornea. The flap is then restored without stitches and your vision becomes better.
Advantages - Most patients can see better the following day.

Custom Lasik
Golden Vision Laser Centers uses the FDA approved VISX CustomVue for custom lasik which allows the physician to measure and correct unique imperfections in each patient’s vision. The CustumVue captures a comprehensive “fingerprint?of each eye and generates an individual treatment for each.

Intralase - All-Laser Lasik

Golden Vision Laser Centers offers this new technology known as IntraLasik which performs the cut without the use of any blade. It is 100% blade free. Not to be confused with some imitation technologies, Intralaseâ„¢ is the only available laser technology to create cornea flap for the purpose of laser refractive surgeries available in the U.S. This state of the art technology utilizes a special frequency laser beam to create the thinnest cornea flap in order to preserve corneal tissue.

Procedures - A computer controlled laser technology sends rapid pulses of light to a preprogrammed position and depth within the cornea. Instead of a one dimensional cut used in traditional Lasik, this method allows doctors to accurately design and control different parts of the flap.
Advantages - Better results include less dryness and more preserved corneal tissue. This IntraLasik is also safer, and is ideal for patients with high prescriptions.

What is iLasik?

iLasik
iLasik is the most advanced laser refractive surgery today. It combines the VISX Advanced Customvue wavefront Lasik and Intralase technology to attain the best Lasik result. Many studies have shown that iLasik is 25 times more precise than the conventional lasik technology. Lasik patients are more likely to achieve 20/20 vision or better with iLasik technology than any other lasik technology today. Another important advantage of iLasik is post surgical results. Patients who underwent iLasik experience less dry eye discomfort than those who had other lasik procedures. It is also the safest lasik procedure, as it requires no blade to create the corneal flap unlike ALL other lasik procedures. This is the only all laser lasik procedure available today.

What are the alternative vision correction procedures if I'm not a good candidate for LASIK?

Photo-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK)/Lasek

PRK/Lasek is an alternative procedure for patients who are not candidates for Conventional Lasik or Bladeless (IntraLasik.) Since this method requires no flap, it is often the treatment of choice for patients with a very thin cornea.

Procedure - In this procedure, no flap is made and the cornea’s outer cells are removed with alcohol. Laser is then applied to reshape the cornea and the cells are put back in place.
Advantages - There is no risk that the flap will be dislocated after recovery. It is good for patients who participate in contact sports.
Disadvantage - The healing time is longer and some discomfort may take place. Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks.

Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)
The Implantable contact lens (ICL) is an innovative vision correction procedure done at our laser care center. It is a popular choice for patients with very high myopia, hyperopia, or thin and abnormal cornea.
Procedure - The procedure is done as an outpatient procedure at our state- of- the- art surgery center. An implant is surgically placed inside your eye. Phakic IOLs are made from material similar to the type used in cataract surgery and considered an attractive procedure based in large part on the phenomenal acceptance of intraocular lenses for cataract patients
In phakic implant surgery the lens is inserted in addition to your natural lens and allows the eye to see without the aid of thick nearsighted glasses or contacts. Using the technology already widely used for placement of cataract intraocular lenses, we are able to inject the lens through a small corneal incision. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and take about 30-60 minutes.

Clear Lens Extractions (CLE)
The procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes 15-20 minutes to complete. During the procedure the clear lens of your eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant. The new implant will attempt to eliminate most of your refractive error. The procedure has minimal discomfort and patients are able to see the next day without the need for their strong contact lenses or glasses. As with any refractive procedure, patients may still need glasses or weaker contact lenses to completely correct their vision.

Multifocal/ Accommodating IOL Implants
Previously when performing cataract or clear lens extraction the only choice was to replace your natural lens with a Monofocal (one fixed focal point) implant. Now we can offer our patients the advanced premium implants which can correct for both distance and near vision. These are referred to as Multifocal/ Accommodating Implants. The following three types of implants are currently available: ReStor, ReZoom and Crystalens. Please ask your doctor which implants would be best for you.

Is Laser Vision Safe?

At Golden Vision Laser Centers, we believe that it is important for our patients to understand the possible potential risks that may follow the laser procedure. Although no procedure is risk free, 98-99% of the patients have no problems. With careful post follow-up examinations by our doctors, chances of any of the below are significantly reduced. However if they do occur, virtually all of the problems are treatable and can be improved over time. Glare at night is part of the natural healing process and will gradually decrease after the procedure.
Possible Risks - Although LASIK is a relatively safe procedure with only a few accounts of complications, the following factors should be considered:

* Infection
* Inflammation
* Corneal Flap Problems
* Undercorrection or Overcorrection


Possible Side Effects - A few temporary side effects can be expected as part of the recovery process:

* Fluctuating vision (during the initial few days)
* Dry Eyes
